By Ms. Bashair Ahmed, Executive Director, Shabaka Social Enterprise
Over the past year, it has been a busy and wonderful journey for Shabaka. From humble beginnings as a start-up social enterprise, we have evolved and asserted our vision, with big plans and ideas for the future to create a space for diaspora, especially second and subsequent generations, to engage in development and humanitarian initiatives in Africa and the Middle East.
Since our launch we have held and participated in a number of events to connect diaspora and to amplify their presence in various arenas. Most recently, Shabaka was part of a delegation of diaspora organisations at the first World Humanitarian Summit, where we highlighted the important role diaspora plays in responding to humanitarian crises.
Recognising the importance of listening to the voices of our communities, we are launching a survey to guide our future projects. The survey aims to capture data on the engagement of second generation diaspora/children of migrants in development and humanitarian response in countries or regions of origin. The focus is on diasporas from the Horn of Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia) and the Middle East (Yemen, Iraq, Syria). Our objective is to better understand current engagements and existing platforms that support these initiatives and to build a network of diaspora who are involved or interested in these sectors. Based on the survey findings, we plan to make recommendations for further project(s) to respond to these needs.
There are several ways you can take part in this project:
- Fill out this short survey (closes July 31, 2016)
- Email us if you would like to take part in a half hour interview about your thoughts: firstname.lastname@example.org
- Await the final report and collaborate with the Shabaka team to develop/launch a project that addresses identified challenges
